The 6 Steps in the Manufacturing Process of a Stainless Steel Product

Stainless steel is a widely used material to fabricate various components, machines, tools, types of equipment, electrical elements, and much more. From elements of decorations to critical surgical tools stainless steel has wide applications. SS products manufacturers in India are leading the world by producing excellent quality stainless steel products. Companies like Viraj Profiles are manufacturing stainless steel products in a vast range to meet diverse requirements. In this blog let us dive into the manufacturing process of products from this versatile material. Continue reading!!

Stainless steel is defined as a steel alloy that is manufactured using ordinary low-carbon alloy steel which has at least 10% chromium ingredient, and it is the chromium that sets stainless steel apart and makes it non-corrosive and heat resistant. Its shiny and reflective surface makes it a distinguished material.

Manufacturing Process of Stainless Steel

Heating Process

The first step to manufacturing stainless steel products starts from heating the raw materials to their melting point. For this the material is placed in the mostly electric heating furnace, to melt down. Usually, the process takes about 8 to 12 hours for complete melting. The process is carried out under strict supervision and controls.

Removing Excess Carbon from the Conglomeration

Once complete melting process is place then the next step starts. Special machines and equipment are used to eliminate the excess carbon content to clear the stainless steel. Through this process, various grades of steel are produced. Tweaking the carbon removal results in stainless steel of different varieties like Grade 310, Grade 304, and many more. It is the carbon content that determines the brittleness, and tensile strength of steel.

Fine-Tuning

It is the step used to fine-tune the end product. The molten metal is stirred to distribute the different components for thorough mixing. This step ensures that the final stainless steel formed has the same quality throughout. Uniform mixing is much needed for good quality stainless steel products.

Casting

The next step is casting or forming to give different forms to the molten material through hot or cold rolling techniques. Hot rolling is used to create blooms and billets. It mostly gives a rough finish, but for precise measurements and finishes, the cold rolling technique is used. The other casting methods like cutting and picking are used to transform the steel slabs into sheets, plates, strips, etc. After that annealing, controlled heating, and cooling are used to enhance the internal strength of the product.

Cutting and shaping

Now the steel is cut and shaped to get the desired end product to create a wider choice.

Final surface finishing

The final stage of the manufacturing process is to achieve finished, smooth, and shiny surfaces using different techniques like grinding, polishing, etc.
