PTE Syllabus: A complete guide for your understanding

PTE is a computer-based language testing exam, which is held for the non-native speakers. Those candidate who are willing to apply to foreign universities in English-speaking countries appears for this exam. PTE syllabus is a very fixed pattern which is easy for a candidate to understand. The validity of this exam is for 2 years. PTE Exam Syllabus

It comprises three sections which are as follows:

PTE Speaking and Writing Section

This section includes tests based on speaking and writing skills. The questions are in forms of recordings and text prompts. It has the following parts:

Personal Introduction

It comprises of 1 question with 55 seconds to answer. Moreover, you have to speak about yourself.

Read Aloud

It comprises of 6 to 7 questions. The text prompt is 60 words. Thus, the candidate gets 40 to 50 seconds to prepare their response. So, their time varies as per the length of the prompt.

Repeat Sentence

This task has 10-12 questions and the candidate gets 15 seconds to record the response.

Describe Image

It has 3-4 questions where an image is given to the candidate to see and then prepare a response describing the image. In addition, the candidate gets 40 seconds to record the response and around 25 seconds to examine the image.

Re-tell Lecture

It consists of 1 or 2 questions. Each candidate gets a total of 90 seconds. Out of these, 10 seconds are for preparation and 40 seconds are for recording your answer. Thus, you have to listen to a segment, take notes, and then respond.

Answer Short Questions

It consists of 5 to 6 questions. You have to answer the question in short. Moreover, you will get 20 seconds to record the response.

Summarize Written Text

It has 1 or 2 questions. Besides, you read a text to analyze and you get 10 minutes to write the task summary of 300 words.

Essay

The task contains 1 or 2 questions. Besides, you read a text of 1 or 2 sentences and you have 20 minutes to write an essay from the given prompt.

Besides, this section consists of 28 to 35 questions. Thus, you have 55 to 68 minutes to submit all the responses.

PTE Reading Section

Here, there are text prompts available for the candidate in the form of questions. Candidates are judged on the basis of their understanding. This section comprises the following parts:

Multiple Choice, Single Answer

It has  1 or 2 questions where you have to read a text and choose 1 option that is more relevant to the question.

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers

It comprises of 1 or 2 questions where you have to read a text and choose more than 1 option more relevant to the question.

Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks

It contains 4 to 5 questions. It has a 300-word text and you have to drag the correct option to fill the gaps.

Re-order Paragraphs

This task has 2 to 3 questions where you have to read a text and re-arrange the paragraphs in the correct order.

Fill in the Blanks

It consists of 5 to 6 questions. It consists of a 80-word text prompt. The candidate has to drag the right option to fill the empty spaces.

Moreover, there are around 15 questions in this section and you get 30 minutes in total to respond.

PTE Listening Section

Here, candidates are given few recordings in the form of questions. The criteria for evaluating is based on your understanding of spoken English. This section is considered an important part of PTE syllabus. This includes the following parts:

Summarize the Spoken Text

It comprises of 1 or 2 questions. Besides, 60 to 90 seconds to listen to a text and then 10 minutes to write a 50 to 70-word summary of the recording.

Fill in the Blanks

It consists of 2 to 3 questions. Candidate gets 30 to 60 seconds to listen to a recording and to fill the gaps in the given text.

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers

It contains 1 or 2 questions. Candidates get 40 to 90 seconds to listen to a recording. Then, they choose more than one relevant options.

Highlight Correct Summary

It has  1 or 2 questions. The candidate gets 30 to 90 seconds to listen to the recording and choose the correct summary of it.

Multiple Choice, Single Answer

This task has of 1 or 2 questions. The candidate gets 40 to 90 seconds of time to listen to a recording and choose 1 response relevant to the question.

Select Missing Word

It consists of 1 or 2 questions where a recording plays and you have to complete the text based on the recording.

Highlight Incorrect Word

There are 2 to 3 questions where a recording plays and you have to highlight the incorrect word in the text.

Write from Dictation

This task type has 3 to 4 questions where candidate listens to a recording and re-writes the same sentence.
