Despite what many people think, doing two jobs at once doesn’t always make you tired. It could be less stressful than managing a single profession, based on my experience. In this post, I’ll explain why I’ve pursued many careers and why it’s important to do so, particularly for those who are ambitious and young.
When did I begin juggling two jobs?
I can trace it back to my time as an international connections game studies major at the university. Although I enjoyed this study, I was still too young to really comprehend how to use such broad information in everyday situations.
In addition, after seeing friends struggle to find employment and change careers after graduation, I came to the conclusion that I had to choose the more difficult path as a student if I didn’t want to suffer the same fate.
I made the decision to balance a variety of obligations, including tutoring, volunteering, and even running a company, in addition to my on-campus studies. I go into more depth about them in the “Jobs I Did in My Life” episode.
When I work on two jobs at once, my productivity increases
I really work less when I have a lot of free time, but I doubt that anybody else feels this way. More time does not equate to more accomplished tasks since, in my opinion, I am not at my best when I feel like I have endless time.
For instance, I will need precisely eight hours to complete an English task if I have eight hours allotted to it. However, if you give me additional stuff to do in the same amount of time, I’ll accomplish it all on schedule. My experience aligns with Parkinson’s Law, which states that tasks may grow to occupy the allotted time frame.
Even while I was studying overseas, I was still able to maintain my practice of working and studying simultaneously. It did, among other things, improve my time management abilities. But it wasn’t the whole explanation. The subsequent narrative was one of the additional outside factors that came into play.
Balancing two jobs to improve your life
An unexpected event set me on the path of building more than one career, realizing the equal importance of a second career regardless of having a dream job.
In my fourth year as a Ph.D. student, I was selected to attend the faculty board’s meetings to contribute ideas from the perspective of a Ph.D. student. The experience meant a lot to me as it enlightened me about what life professors have — the tasks they handle, the pressures or administrative issues they struggle with, and so on.
Had I not been in those meetings, I would have assumed that professors only managed research and teaching tasks. And if so, I would not know that my beloved associate professor (who I featured in another episode of The Present Writer) was denied promotion to full professor again.
The news was a real shock to me. My teacher was a kind, intelligent person and a learned, influential scholar in the academic world. I supported him during the dossier preparation process, and it took me two days to compile his several-page-long list of research.
When a hobby becomes your second job
You don’t have to make money from what you like doing to pursue it as a hobby. Alternatively, you may make a great job out of your pastime. Profitability is what determines if something is a pastime or a profession. In relation to this, a lot of people contend that we shouldn’t make money off of our interests as doing so might eventually ruin them.
It was the same notion I used to have. I’ve realized over time how out of date that viewpoint is. I put my whole self into my blog, The Present Writer, without even considering the possibility of turning a profit. It was formed out of passion.
But I’ve come to understand that having a reliable source of funding helps me to devote all of my attention to content creation. I don’t have to worry about working with individuals who I may not get along with.
There is more to this tale, but to put it briefly, you may pursue a pastime for personal fulfillment or turn it into a second profession that generates cash, improves the community, and instills values.
It’s not necessary to give up on your passion to pursue a second profession in something you like. If you can stay true to your principles and have the means to support them, your enthusiasm will only intensify and drive you farther.
